Chihuahua Care
If you own a Chihuahua you probably already know how much fun it is to care for your pet. Because they’re so tiny, you just can’t help yourself but to do everything possible to make sure that they are taken care of completely. With this in mind there are some other things that you may want to take into consideration when taking steps to care for a Chihuahua. In this article you will discover a few different methods that may help you make the process go a lot smoother. If you are extremely focused on increasing the quality of life for your Chihuahua, follow the steps listed below and you will have complete success.
Proper Chihuahua care is only as good as the pet owner that performs the steps.
* Bathing your Chihuahua:
You’ll need to make sure that when you are bathing your Chihuahua that you only use enough water to get them wet, and rinse them off. Because Chihuahuas are so small, many people may think that they can swim like there’s no tomorrow. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Because Chihuahuas have such a small body mass, it will be very easy for them to simply sink to the bottom. You want to make sure that you only get their coats wet enough that you can wash them easily, and rinse them off and dry them as soon as you can.
* Toenail Care:
After you finish washing your Chihuahua, this will be the right time to focus on their toenails. Many Chihuahuas will actually grow very long toenails if they are not cared for properly. So you must make sure that you have the proper toenail kit in order to trim their toenails properly. Keeping their toenails trimmed will prevent them from hurting themselves when they scratch. When their toenails are long they can actually scratch their toenails into their own skin. So make sure when caring for your Chihuahua that their toenails are taking care of.
* Pet Proof your Home:
Because your Chihuahua is very small it will be important for you to pet proof your home. They can get into spaces that you would never have thought possible, so it will be important for you to make sure anything that can hurt them is put away properly. This includes any food you do not want them to have, products you don’t want them to get into, and there is wiring that can be around the home that will prove to be dangerous.
* Regular Medical Checkups:
It will be truly important for you to take your Chihuahua to get their regular checkups because you never know when something might pop up that you aren’t aware of. Although they are tiny little dogs, they can get sick or have problems that you may not know about. One of the major issues with a Chihuahua is that their eyes are so large and they are so close to the ground. This allows them to get eye infections quite frequently. Proper care will be very important in this area so make sure the checkups a regular.
Chihuahua care is not that difficult as long as you maintain a program. This will include making sure your Chihuahua is cleaned properly, their toenails are trimmed, and your house is completely pet proof. Regular medical visits are important, so including this will make sure that caring for a Chihuahua is done properly.

Step 3: Each time your pet does its business the way it’s supposed to, you will need to commend them with positive reinforcement allowing them to feel extremely comfortable and happy they did something to please you. No animal will ever do what you tell them to do if you force them to do it. It may work once or twice, but your animal will end up not doing anything.
Positive reinforcement needs to be used each and every time your pet acknowledges and reacts to your command in a positive manner. Once this is proven several times you will find that learning how to potty train your Chihuahua wasn’t as difficult as you thought.

Step 2: Chihuahua potty training is something that goes on all day long, until you feel comfortable that they are making the journey to their special spot of their own. This is very important because many people will start the potty training process and then give up halfway through. This simply cannot happen when potty training a Chihuahua. Instead you must be determined and committed to making sure they are going to their spot during the times when they need to take care of their business. Each time they go you need to use the commands such as “go potty” so they can associate this command with doing their business.

Step 1: Although Chihuahua’s may seem stubborn they are in fact one of the most intelligent dog breeds on the planet. Because of their intelligence, if they are not trained properly from the get-go you will find that their stubbornness will kick in and they will almost be impossible to train. If your Chihuahua is a puppy you can begin training with them immediately by showing them where their spot is for doing their business. The important thing you need to remember is the exact times of day when your puppy needs to go potty. These times are typically after they wake up, and right after they eat. You want to make a note of this by following them right after these particular occasions. You will need to use commands such as “go potty” when taking your dog to their special spot.
